Before forming his own jatha, he played tabla with many renowned raagis such as Bhai Pal Singh, Bhai Santa Singh Kanwal, Bhai Gurnam Singh (Delhi), Bhai Kartar Singh Parwana, Sant Sujan Singh, Bhai Thakur Singh Almast and many more.

In the initial years of his training, he learned how to play the tabla from Bhai Bahadur Singh (Jalandhar) and then went on to learn from Ustad Kirpal Singh (Patiala) for 15 years.
